Itinerary
Your journey begins in Kasese, a bustling town located at the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. Here, you’ll have the day to acclimatize to the altitude, prepare for the trek, and immerse yourself in the local culture. You might choose to explore the vibrant local markets or simply rest and prepare for the adventure ahead.
The first day of trekking takes you from the trailhead at Nyakalengija through the homesteads and plantations of the Bakonjo, the indigenous people of the Rwenzoris. As you ascend, you’ll be treated to stunning views of the surrounding landscapes. Your destination for the night is Nyabitaba Hut, nestled amidst the mountains.
The second day of trekking takes you from Nyabitaba Hut to John Matte Hut. You’ll traverse the Kurt Shafer Bridge to cross the Mubuku River, and along the way, you’ll enjoy stunning views of Mount Stanley and Mount Speke. The day ends at John Matte Hut, where you’ll rest and recharge for the next day’s trek.
On the third day, you’ll trek from John Matte Hut to Bujuku Hut. This challenging but rewarding day takes you through the boggy Bigo Bog and the scenic Bujuku Valley. As you navigate the terrain, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of the surrounding landscapes.
The fourth day of the trek takes you from Bujuku Hut to Elena Hut, the base camp for the Margherita Peak. The trek becomes more challenging as you navigate rocky paths and glaciers, but the stunning views of the surrounding landscapes make the journey worthwhile.
The fifth day is the highlight of the trek. You’ll ascend from Elena Hut to Margherita Peak, the highest point in the Rwenzori Mountains. After celebrating at the summit, you’ll descend to Kitandara Hut for a well-deserved rest.
On the final day of the trek, you’ll descend from Kitandara Hut to Nyakalengija. As you make your way down the mountain, you’ll have time to reflect on the incredible journey you’ve had and say goodbye to the “Mountains of the Moon”.
Location
The trek takes place in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park, located in western Uganda near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. The park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is home to the third highest mountain peak in Africa. The park is renowned for its unique biodiversity, with a wide variety of flora and fauna that can’t be found anywhere else in the world.
